No Job Description University Communications at ECU builds awareness of and support for the university’s mission, achievements and impact through strategic communications, storytelling and engagement. The university social media team within University Communications manages ECU’s flagship social media presence and provides strategic leadership, guidance and support for university-affiliated social media accounts. The Pirate Creator Program brings the student perspective into ECU’s social media storytelling by employing students to create authentic, engaging content that showcases the ECU experience. Pirate Social Media Creators gain hands-on professional experience in social media, content creation and digital storytelling while helping connect ECU with current students, prospective students, alumni and parents. Job Responsibilities: * **Social Media Content Creation and Storytelling (60%)** + Develop original, engaging social media content that showcases the ECU student experience and supports university communications goals. + Create short-form vertical video, photography and other digital content for ECU’s social media platforms, including Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, Threads, LinkedIn and YouTube. + Serve as on-camera talent and participate in university social media content when needed. + Capture and highlight student life, academics, campus traditions, events, organizations, resources and other aspects of the ECU experience. + Write social media copy and develop creative concepts appropriate for ECU’s audiences and platforms. + Edit video and photo content using mobile and desktop editing tools as appropriate. + Complete assigned content projects according to established deadlines and creative direction. + Tell stories from an authentic student perspective while maintaining ECU’s brand voice and standards. * **Social Media Trends and Creative Development (20%)** + Stay informed about emerging social media trends, platform features, content formats, sounds and online conversations relevant to ECU audiences. + Identify trends and creative opportunities that can be appropriately adapted for ECU social media. + Pitch original content ideas and participate in brainstorming and content planning with the university social media team. + Contribute insight into student interests, behaviors and social media preferences to help ECU develop content that resonates with student and prospective student audiences. + Experiment with new storytelling approaches and platform-native content while maintaining university standards. * **Campus Coverage and Collaboration (10%)** + Attend and create content at assigned university events, programs and campus activities. + Collaborate with University Communications staff, fellow Pirate Social Media Creators and campus partners on content projects. + Participate in scheduled content shoots, meetings, training sessions and brainstorming opportunities. + Communicate proactively with the university social media team regarding assignments, scheduling, deadlines and content needs. + Be available for occasional assignments outside standard business hours, including evenings or weekends, as scheduled. * **Brand, Accessibility and Professional Standards (10%)** + Follow ECU brand standards and university social media guidelines, including requirements related to accessibility, artificial intelligence, copyright and intellectual property. + Verify facts and information before incorporating them into university social media content. + Create accessible social media content, including captions and other accessibility elements as required. + Represent ECU professionally and responsibly when creating content, attending events or interacting with members of the university community. + Exercise sound judgment when creating content on behalf of the university and maintain appropriate professional boundaries between personal and university-affiliated social media activity. + Complete required training and incorporate feedback from University Communications staff into assigned work. Minimum Qualifications: * Currently enrolled as a full-time East Carolina University student. * Maintain a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA. * Maintain good academic and disciplinary standing with the university. * Demonstrated interest in social media, digital content creation, photography, videography, communications, marketing, storytelling, acting or a related area. * Comfortable communicating with others and participating in collaborative creative projects. * Willingness to appear on camera and participate in social media content as needed. * Ability to manage assignments, meet deadlines and communicate effectively with supervisors and team members GPA Requirement Minimum of 3.0 Preferred (Majors, Experience, GPA, etc.) * Experience creating short-form video, photography or modern, engaging social media content. * Familiarity with platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, Facebook and emerging social media platforms. * Experience with content creation or editing tools such as Adobe Creative Cloud, Canva, CapCut, Meta Edits or similar applications. * Strong understanding of current social media trends, platform culture and content formats. * Strong written and verbal communication skills. * Creative approach to storytelling and ability to generate original content ideas. * Comfortable working independently and collaboratively. * Knowledge of ECU traditions, campus life, student organizations, resources and the broader student experience. * Interest in developing professional skills in social media, communications, marketing, public relations, photography, videography or digital media.
